Sanford, FL

A Little Sanford History

Sanford is considered to be Central Florida’s oldest city. Known for its brick streets, elegant storefronts, and large Victorian houses, the city was incorporated in 1877 after diplomat Henry Shelton Sanford purchased a plot of land west of Melonville. A thriving agricultural community would later develop and Sanford became an export center for various produce, earning it the nickname “Celery City.” The City of Sanford had a county seat when Seminole County was established in 1913.  Years after that, investments in Central Florida turned Sanford from a farming town to a residential center.

Over the last two decades, downtown Sanford has experienced a remarkable revival, with property values skyrocketing and families from the Northeast flocking to the area for its charming resemblance to their hometowns. The district is now home to a plethora of small businesses, including antique shops, popular coffee houses, and award-winning eateries like Hollerbach’s German Restaurant, a favorite among foodies for over 25 years.

The ever-expanding Orlando-Sanford International Airport is also contributing to the city’s growth, providing travelers with a convenient option for international flights. Additionally, the downtown redevelopment initiative is focusing on expanding the shopping, dining, and entertainment district, which is already a popular spot thanks to the Sanford Riverwalk along Lake Monroe’s shore. Runners, walkers, and anglers enjoy the year-round beautiful Florida weather on this walkway. Meanwhile, the Sanford Marina caters to boat owners who use the slips for a quick weekend ride up the Saint Johns’ River and Lake Monroe.

For those who prefer to stay on land, the Seminole Towne Center shopping complex is one of the largest in Northern Central Florida, featuring national chains and mall stores. Sanford is also home to Seminole State College, the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and the historic Ritz Theater, which still hosts films and stage productions.

Whether you prefer a Victorian-style house or a modern townhome, Sanford has something to suit your taste.
