History

Located in the northern shore of the St. Johns River, the city of DeBary is considered to be one of the South’s most important places. The Timucuan tribes were the first to inhabit the area before they were swept out by the Seminoles.

After Spain ceded Florida to the United States 1821, people from up north migrated to this new place. Some of them chose settle in present-day DeBary. In 1866, a man name Elijah Watson sold land to a couple, Oliver and Amanda Arnett.

Five years later, the Arnetts decided to sell 400 acres of their land to a New York City wine merchant, Samuel Frederick deBary. He would later build a hunting lodge which would soon become the lavish DeBary Hall. Businesses would later spring up and contirbute to the city’s progress.

DeBary died in 1898, but his legacy lives on in the community he helped build. The city was officially incorporated in 1993. It carries the name of its founder.
